On this voyage, the ship sailed from Liverpool bound for South America via Straits, the Master being T. M. Taylor. It appears that Roberts was one of a group of about 10 young English mining engineers headed for Chile or Bolivia.8 |
Employment | from 27 Mar 1926 | Phin Soon Tin Mines, MALAYA; > The Phin Soon tin mine was purchased as a going concern in October 1925 by Malay-Siamese Prospecting Company Ltd from Towkay Cheang Thye Phin, Capitan China of the State of Perak. Located in the District of Tanjong Tualang (about 50 km south of Ipoh), it comprised leases and rights over an area of 1,089 acres. The mine was being worked as a large open cast with a labour force of about 700 men, producing a monthly average of 500 pikuls (60 tonnes) of tin oxide. Singapore Free Press and Singapore Free Press & Mercantile Advertiser reported on 11 Mar 1926 that Mr JWH Fenner has given up the General Managership of Phin Soon Mines Ltd owing to private reasons. Mr EA Roberts took over management of the mine on 27 March 1926. Singapore Free Press & Mercantile Advertiser reported on 5 Mar 1927 that Mr Owen Williams, a Mining Engineer, late of Mount Farrel, Tasmania, has been engaged to manage the Phin Soon Mine and will take over his duties towards the end of March. It is assumed that Williams took over from Roberts. From Singapore press reports during 1928, the Phin Soon share price plummeted from over £1 to about 1/-. By Apr 1930, Phin Soon Mines Ltd was in liquidation. It was said that Phin Soon proved to be a failure owing to insufficient funds. The vendor (Malay-Siamese Prospecting Coy) retained sufficient capital to dictate what capital the company should possess, the result being that the company never had sufficient funds.9,10,11 |
