(Witness) Educationfrom say 1821 to say 1828Rowland John Shelley; Primary/Secondary education, School of missionary John Eyre, cnr Church & Macquarie Sts, Parramatta, NSW; Rowland and his 2 older brothers may have attended this school, which was opposite their home 'Hanleyville'.5
(Witness) History17 Oct 1824     Hamilton Hume and his partner William Hovell left Appin on 2 Oct 1824 (and Hume's station near Lake George on 17 Oct 1824) with 6 convicts, 6 bullocks, 6 pack horses and the necessary provisions. They discovered a whole system of rivers flowing into the Murray, and found abundant well-watered grazing land between the Murrumbidgee and the Murray, and also in Victoria. After a rigorous journey, having crossed the Murray near Albury, they reached Corio Bay (Geelong) on 16 Dec 1824.
The expedition disproved the widely held view that the interior of Australia was an uninhabitable wilderness so that, following their return to Sydney, streams of settlers soon headed south along their route.6,7
AddressOldfr 1829 - Sep 1835Bombowlee, near the Crossing, Tumut, NSW; >
Early in 1829, William and George Shelley pushed their herds south from Yass (probably following the tracks left by Hume and Hovell in 1824) until they struck the Tumut River. At Bombowlee, where Gilmore Creek joins the river, they built a bark hut and settled temporarily. The brothers then built a house of homemade slabs and shingles, halfway between the later homestead and the river, and George lived there from 1832. Although William returned to 'Grampian Hills' at Bungonia, near Goulburn, he continued to direct the Shelleys' interests in Tumut until 1840.
By 1835, the wheat crops and sheep were doing reasonably well and George felt settled enough to ask his childhood sweetheart, Amelia Matilda Waddy, to marry him and he returned to Sydney for that purpose.8

George and Amelia took over out station and run set up by R.H. Rose which embraced most of the Tumut Plains basin and the Gilmore Valley and included Rose's 1,280 acre grant.
     R. Hannibal Rose built the first house in the Tumut District in 1824 and his 1,280 acre grant (at the junction of the Tumut and Goobagandra rivers) was the only grant made in the Tumut district [Burcher?].22
