Margaret lived in Sydney (and elsewhere?) for some time while Arch was away during WW2. However, she was at Dewrang (and Arch was away) when the Cowra breakout occurred on 5 August 1944. 1,104 Japanese prisoners of war attempted to escape from a prisoner of war camp near Cowra (about 70km from Dewrang). It was the largest prison escape of WW2, and one of the bloodiest. During the escape and ensuing manhunt, 4 Australian soldiers and 231 Japanese soldiers were killed. Within 10 days, the remaining escapees were re-captured and imprisoned.
From July 1944, Margaret was at Appin (with the 2 children) for about 6 months. Then she was with her parents at All Saints Rectory, Parramatta for about 6 months.3,4

Note186719 Middle Street, Grenfell, NSW; >
The first church was a wooden structure built in 1867 and located at the corner of Forbes and Middle Street. By 1877 tenders were called for a new church and the foundation stone was laid on 26 Jan 1878 by Mr J.B. Wood. The church was officially opened on 2 Feb 1879 by the Bishop of Bathurst, the Right Reverend Dr Samuel Marsden. The Church was re roofed in 1925 with slate.1

(Church) Employmentfr Apr 1913 - Jun 1917Rev. Edward (Pat) Walker; Parish Rector, Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Grenfell, NSW; >
Extracts from 'The Parish of Holy Trinity Church, Grenfell, 1877-1977':
Mr Levick resigned in February 1913 and Rev. Edward Walker was licensed on 15 April 1913. A curate, Rev. R. G. Nicholls, was appointed on the stipend of £130 pa -- he was to have the use of the rector's horse and sulky. By December, a suitable horse and conveyance was found as long as the council found horse feed. ...
     ...
Mr Walker took over his term from 1913 to 1916 [actually 1917], which took in the difficult war years of the 1914-1918 War. ...
In May 1914, the first time in history, Grenfell was favoured with a visit from the highest dignitary of the Church, His Grace the Archbishop of Sydney and Primate of Australia, the Most Reverend Dr Wright. He was accompanied by the Right Reverend Dr Long, Bishop of Bathurst. A banquet was held and a public meeting to follow. The Grenfell Observer and the Grenfell Record gave a huge covering of this important event. They stayed overnight, Dr Long at the Union Bank and the Archbishop at Mr P. V. Carter's "Clare Park" property.
In June 1915, Mr Walker was approached about taking services at Bimbi and Kikiamah while other arrangements were being made, following Mr Redhead leaving the parish of Tubbul. Delegates attended from Bimbi and Kikiamah to meet with wardens and discuss the possibility of Mr Walker taking temporary services.
     ...
At this stage [1916], a horse for Sunday Services had to be hired or supplied by a parishioner. After the departure of the Curate, Mr Nicholls, in 1916, there was much discussion on the need for locomotion for the rector as he would now have four country services monthly. The Rector was told that if he could purchase a car, the council would allow him £80 a year upkeep. It was impossible for Mr Walker to buy a car, so the wardens arranged transportation for February and March. In 1916, the rector's stipend was £300. Following the failure to obtain a car, the vestry offered to feed two horses on condition that in the event of securing a curate, the rector find locomotion for him.
     ...
In July 1916, Rev. C. C. Crowley was appointed as assistant to Mr Walker, but his term was short-lived owing to the financial position of the parish.
     ...
Rev. E. Walker tendered his resignation as he had accepted a position at St Paul's, Chatswood on 12 June 1917. The Venerable Archdeacon W. K. Howell was licensed on 8 September 1917.2
