AddressOld | from 1893 to ca 1896 | Elspeth (Elsie) Harris; The Cherry Garden, Tantangara area, NSW; > The Cherry Garden location, so called because of the small orchard of Kentish cherries, is at the base of the Gurrangorambla Range, about 60km SW of Canberra and a few kilometres NNE of the current Tantangara Reservoir. It seems likely that the house, one of the very first houses built in the area, came into existence on the instructions of Henry Tarlton Whitty, a wealthy grazier who owned Tarramia station on the Murray River near Corowa. He also held the lease over thousands of acres on Currango Plain and Kellys Plain at the time. William Henry* (Argentine) Harris, an Englishman born in India, had migrated to Argentina to become a cattle rancher. His venture failed and he was forced to return to England with his wife and young children. He had lowered himself, in status, below the wider Harris family so he was shipped out to Australia and further removed from family contact by being despatched to The Cherry Garden in 1893 – perhaps because his sister was married to Henry Whitty. His high country neighbours gave him the name Argentine to distinguish him from other Harris families. He continued to show some of his acquired South American characteristics -- riding, dress, and ability to swear in Spanish. There are indications that the building at The Cherry Garden, even though of split slab and shingle construction, was rather extensive. But Argentine and his family lived there for only a few years, and the extensions were probably undertaken by the Fischer family, who lived there subsequently. * actually Hamlyn7 |

Military | fr 6 Mar 1916 - 25 Mar 1919 | > Enlisted 6 Mar 1916 at R.A. S. Grounds, NSW [presumably Sydney]. During late 1915 and early 1916, there were about 10 recruitment marches (known as snowball marches) from country areas of NSW to recruitment centres in Sydney or major regional towns. It is possible that Jack was in one of these marches, but probably not as none of them passed through Corowa and he enlisted about a month after the last march concluded. His Attestation Paper states he was a Natural Born British Subject born in Canyada De Gomez, Argentina; age 26 years, 2 months; trade or calling Farmer; unmarried; Next of kin Elsie Higgins (Mother), Maragle, Tooma, NSW. Service No. 6040, Private in 19th Reinforcements, 13th Infantry Battalion, Australian Imperial Force. Awarded Military Medal and Bar. In June 1916, the 13th Battalion sailed from Egypt to France and the Western Front. The battalion took part in bloody trench warfare at Pozieres (Aug 1916), Bullecourt (Apr 1917), Belgium (1917) and Amiens (1918). Jack was discharged (Return to Australia) on 25 Mar 1919. |

AddressOld | 1893 | Agnes Mitchell Plant; Lot 9, Block E, Section 42, Riverside Avenue, Mildura, VIC; > Parents and 5 children. The family's first property in Mildura. '[while living in Glasgow] Papa used to go to London quite often in connection with business and when there he visited the Chaffey Bros office and evidently was carried away with the idea of migrating to Mildura, which was being widely advertised by a large "Red Book" which they had published. He apparently persuaded two others [Agnes Proudfoot's brother WM Plant, and her sister, married to WC Gordon] to join him and the three of them bought three blocks of land ... The arrangement was that they should be planted with fruit trees or vines and that the owners should wait two years before they took their way out to Mildura. The three families arrived as arranged to find that the land had only been planted with the trees about a week or so before we arrived ... The Gordons only stayed in Mildura long enough to book a passage home again to England; he was so disgusted with the way things had turned out. The land which had been allocated to the three families was no good.'9 Resident: George Alfred (Alf) Proudfoot Resident: Agnes Gray (Nan/Nannie) Proudfoot Resident: Isabel Proudfoot Resident: Winifred Katherine (Winnie) Proudfoot Witness: Florence Elizabeth (Betty) Proudfoot |
