Parents and 5 children.
Travelled from Glasgow, Scotland to Mildura, VIC.5
(Witness) AddressOld1893George Thomson Proudfoot, Agnes Mitchell Plant; Lot 9, Block E, Section 42, Riverside Avenue, Mildura, VIC; >
Parents and 5 children. The family's first property in Mildura.
'[while living in Glasgow] Papa used to go to London quite often in connection with business and when there he visited the Chaffey Bros office and evidently was carried away with the idea of migrating to Mildura, which was being widely advertised by a large "Red Book" which they had published. He apparently persuaded two others [Agnes Proudfoot's brother WM Plant, and her sister, married to WC Gordon] to join him and the three of them bought three blocks of land ... The arrangement was that they should be planted with fruit trees or vines and that the owners should wait two years before they took their way out to Mildura. The three families arrived as arranged to find that the land had only been planted with the trees about a week or so before we arrived ... The Gordons only stayed in Mildura long enough to book a passage home again to England; he was so disgusted with the way things had turned out. The land which had been allocated to the three families was no good.'6

(Matron of Honour) Marriage21 May 1924Hamlyn Lavicount Vernon (Vern) Harris, Olive Marie (Mollie) Proudfoot; St Paul's Church of England, Chatswood, NSW; >
SMH 3 Jun 1924: The marriage was celebrated at St Paul's Church of England, Chatswood on May 21, of Miss Mollie Proudfoot, youngest daughter of Mr G. T. Proudfoot, of Montrose, Cottesloe, W.A., and Mr A. L. Vernon Harris (late A.I.F.), youngest son of Mr and Mrs H. L. Harris, of Wermatong Station, Tumut. Rev. Edward Walker officiated. The bride ... was given away by her father ..., was attended by her sister and Mr G. T. H. Harris acted as best man. After the ceremony, the guests were entertained by Mrs Walker at the rectory.9,10,11
AddressOldb 17 Dec 1924Darlinghurst, NSW12
Marriage17 Dec 1924George Thomas Hamlyn (Tom) Harris; Presbyterian Church, Manly, NSW; >
Marriage certificate shows that the witnesses were W and Lurline Lester.
Apparently Tom had been to George Proudfoot to ask for his daughter's hand. They agreed to have a drink to seal the agreement. Tom thought this meant something strong and therefore asked for a scotch and soda. George responded by ordering two ginger ales!
Tom and Betty's wedding appears to have been a secret, as one would expect that the witnesses would have been family members (the Lesters are not known to the family). While it was not forbidden to be married, young medical students were not expected to be married. But Tom and Betty had been to WW1 and seen some life, so it was not altogether unexpected that they got married while he was still studying.9,13

AddressHarriet Huntingdon (Hetty) Harris; INDIA; With spouse. RS moved to Coimbatore c. 1860 but probably married after then [Bernard p2].
Biography     Robert Stanes was the second youngest of 9 children of James Stanes and Sarah Poultney Worth. James was a glass and china shipping merchant in London who established a presence in India by sending several of his sons to that country. James Jnr arrived in 1848 and established the Runnymede Coffee Estate near Coonor, but drowned in 1852. Two other brothers followed -- William in 1852 and Thomas in 1855.
But the greatest impact in India was made by Robert Stanes, who arrived in 1858 at the age of 17, and immediately launched himself as a coffee planter in Coimbatore. In 1863, he established the first inland coffee-curing plant in India. But in 1885, Stanes & Co., the family business failed and that led to the collapse of Robert Stanes' firm in India. Robert was almost penniless but started again and the business prospered. By the time of his death, he owned cotton mills, coffee and tea plantations, coffee curing plants, motor works and tyre retreading plants.
He became chairman of the Coimbatore City Council. He set up the Stanes School in Coimbatore in 1862. His elder brother Thomas had established the Stanes School in Coonoor in 1858.
In 1913, he was awarded the Kaiser-i-Hind Gold Medal for services to Coimbatore and to education, and he was knighted in the 1920 New Year Honours.
Sir Robert died in Coimbatore in 1936 and is buried alongside his wife Hettie at All Saints church, Coonoor.
