Thomas Holten had of late fallen upon parlous times ...
He was a noticeable figure here when the public life of Grenfell was far more strenuous than it is today ... From Grenfell's earliest days, [he] took a lively interest in mining affairs, even when poundkeeper and stock and station agent ...
[He] took part in many public affairs of the town. For years, his red coated figure was familiar to habitues of the Grenfell racecourse; he was active on progress, hospital, and other committees, and during the most memorable year in the epoch of hospital squabbledom, when hundreds voted, polled the highest number of votes ever cast for a hospital committee man in Grenfell ...
At one time he was spoken of as a probable candidate for Parliament, and had be been returned, there could have been no question about his voice being heard more frequently than that of the chosen of Grenfell. He was conspicuous in the Vaughn election campaigns as an active barracker for his neighbour at the One Mile, his indefatigable labours on these occasions contributing in no small degree to victory.
He was a valiant adherent of the Anglican Church, and for years his seat was never vacant, and his voice was ever heard. ...¹⁵

Coroner Mr John Taylor held an Inquest on Wed 3 Nov 1909. The deceased's body was found about 7:30pm on 2 Nov 1909, a few yards off the road on some vacant land at the One Mile. Constables Twemlow and Ford had examined the body and found no marks of violence or suspicious circumstances.
Dr Rygate had examined the body and found no marks of violence about the place [of death] or any signs of disturbance, and no marks of violence on the body; he believed death was due to heart failure.
The Coroner found, on the basis of medical evidence from Dr Rygate, that death occurred about 7:00 pm, probably due to heart failure.¹⁹
