(Witness) NoteMar 1936Ernest John (Jack) Emerson, Lily Rose Ellen Whitehead; >
Notice in the Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 10 Mar 1936, Page 6:

Cable news has been received from the U.S.A., announcing the tragic death following a motor accident of the Rev. and Mrs E. J. Emerson-Elliott, who were on a tour. The Rev. E. J. Emerson-Elliott was the brother of Mr. L. D. E. Elliott of Messrs. Guthrie & Co., Ltd, Kuala Lumpur.
Notice in the Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 16 Mar 1936, Page 7:
News has been received from Florida, U.S.A., announcing the death, following a motor accident, of the Rev. and Mrs E. J. Emerson-Elliott, the former being a brother of Mr. L. D. E. Elliott of Guthrie and Co., Ltd, Kuala Lumpur.
Comment: The information in these notices is consistent with information provided by LDEE in later years (eg, in 1983 as explained in LDEE's Note tag 'Incorrect family information') but is clearly fictitious, as LDEE's brother EJ Emerson and his wife Lily lived for many years after 1936. So, how and why did the notices appear? Given that there could not have been any cable news received from the USA by the newspaper, the information must have been provided by LDEE. Perhaps the word of a reputable Englishman was accepted by the newspaper without question. Perhaps the appearance of 2 notices within a week confirms a degree of sloppiness on the part of the paper. There were no reports of these deaths in the Straits Times -- perhaps that paper required a higher standard of proof.
Later in the month of Mar 1936, notices appeared in both local newspapers of the engagement of LDEE and Bunty Melville. In those notices, LDEE's parents were referred to as 'the late', although both were alive at that time. It seems likely that LDEE was making it appear that he had no living relatives who might be expected to attend his wedding in the Far East.13
Engagedc Mar 1936Leslie Denis (Denis) Emerson-Elliott; MALAYA; >
Notice in The Straits Times, 19 Mar 1936:
The engagement is announced between Leslie Denis Elliott, youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tracey W. Emerson-Elliott, of Milverton, Somerset, and Bunty, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Melville, Carey Island, Selangor.
Notice in The Singapore Free Press and Mercantile Advertiser, 23 Mar 1936:
The engagement is announced between Mr. L. D. Elliott and Miss 'Bunty' Melville, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Melville, of Carey Island, Selangor.14,15
