Kandang Kerbau, Singapore (Hospital)
?, ID3437
Note | | In 1858, a General Hospital was built in the Kandang Kerbau District. It was segregated into two sections – one for Europeans and the other for the locals. Over the next 65 years, it was variously used for screening and treatment of women with venereal diseases, as a home for women and girls, for female pauper patients, and for female lepers and poor children. It eventually became the Pauper Hospital for Women and Children. In 1924, the hospital was converted into a free maternity hospital (a hospital for the poor who could not afford to pay the medical fees) -- it opened as the Kandang Kerbau Hospital (KK Hospital) with 30 beds and 12 children’s cots. During World War 2, KKH was converted into an Emergency General Hospital for the treatment of war casualties. During the Japanese Occupation, it became known as Chua Byoin (Central Hospital) and served as a General Hospital for Japanese civilians and the local community. In 1946, it resumed its function as the only O&G hospital serving the country. KKH grew significantly over the next 20 years and in 1966, it won a place in the Guinness Book of Records for having the largest number of births (39,835) in a single maternity facility in that year. During the 1990s, KK was restructured and moved to a new building complex at 100 Bukit Timah Road as the KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH). Further growth ensued so that now (in the 2020s), KKH has 830 beds, is a leader in Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics and Neonatology and a referral centre with a team of 500 specialists providing tertiary services to manage high-risk conditions in women and children.1 |
