Extracted from articles in various Victorian newspapers (accessed via National Library of Australia Trove) over the period 1924 to 1955:
Winnington Grammar School took its name from the school which John Ruskin founded -- or at least often visited -- in Chester, Cheshire, England. It commenced operation in 1918 with 6 pupils in the Parish Hall, Ringwood, as a primary school for boys and girls. The owners and principals were sisters, Miss E. M. Crampton Hall and Miss Irene Hall. The aim of the school was "to give a thorough education on broad lines, to develop each pupil's personality -- intellectual, moral, physical and spiritual -- and to encourage the pupils to have wide interests so as to take their places in life as good and useful citizens". The school motto was "Ad Altiora" -- Towards higher things.
In 1924 in a new building (fronting Central Park in Ringwood) was erected for the school. Facilities included a well-stocked library, reception room, students' dining room, basket ball grounds, recreation apparatus, experimental garden plots and a Montessori department for the juveniles. Girls were taken from Kindergarten to School Leaving, boys to age 10.
A kindergarten and sub-primary branch opened in Sword's Hall, Blackburn in April 1926.
Given that girls were enrolled to Leaving and boys only to age 10, the school's emphasis was more on the female pupils. So much so, that the school was referred to in some press reports as Winnington Girls' Grammar School.
Miss Crampton Hall died on 1 Feb 1943 and Miss Irene Hall decided to retire in 1945. From 1946, the school was taken over by Mr and Mrs R. S. Stiebel. Mr Stiebel was a fully qualified teacher who had been associated with Geelong, Ballarat and Brighton Grammar schools over many years, followed by 6 years in the RAAF. He announced plans to develop the school, including taking boys (as well as girls) to Leaving standard. Advertising during 1946 and 1947 referred to "a School for Boys to age fourteen and Girls to age twelve", but later in 1947 it was announced that the school would take boys and girls to Intermediate and Leaving standard. There were 36 pupils at the start of 1946, nearly 60 by August that year and 100 at the start of 1947. Increasing enrolments resulted in a building program, largely concluded during 1947, with new classrooms, a gymnasium, hobby and carpentry rooms and more land for future development.
In Nov 1946, Mr Stiebel announced that "Many useful donations have been made to the school, including ... two bursaries -- the Emerson-Elliott Bursary of £20 per year for three years available to sons and daughters of service men who were totally incapacitated or were killed in the 1939-45 war ..." This Bursary was available for children between the ages of nine and eleven years on 1 Jan 1947. In Jan 1947, the principal thanked a group of donors, including Mr and Mrs Emerson-Elliott -- it is not clear whether this referred just to the Bursary or to additional donations.
Apart from adertisements for teaching staff, there were fewer than usual press reports during 1949 to 1951. By Jan 1952, the school had nearly 250 pupils.

The Emerson-Elliott children did not feature in the 1946 academic or sports prize lists.
