Wooroloo Sanatorium, Wooroloo, WA (Hospital)
?, ID4310
Note | | Linley Valley Road, Wooroloo, WA; Wooroloo Sanatorium was established by the WA State Government in response to the infectious diseases, such as typhoid, diphtheria, and tuberculosis, that were widely prevalent in the aftermath of the mass migration that came as a result of the gold rushes in Western Australia in the early part of the twentieth century. Emphasis was placed on the treatment of tuberculosis through the provision of fresh air and sunshine. Patients with leprosy were also isolated at Wooroloo. The sanatorium opened in 1914 or 1915 (different sources give different dates), the site at Wooroloo having been chosen because of the beauty of the countryside and elevation of the site. It stands on the slopes of Beechina Hill above the Linley Valley and Wooroloo Creek, 60km north east of Perth. By the 1960s, the sanatorium was no longer required and the institution was operated as a geriatric and a district hospital. In 1970, the WA Prisons Department officially acquired the site and it was converted to a minimum security prison for short-term offenders. Admission and Discharge Registers for Wooroloo Sanatorium for the period 1915 to 1969 are held by the State Records Office of Western Australia, but access is restricted fro 100 years. The image shown was taken in 1915, and it is not known how much change there had been by the early 1950s, when Norman Emerson-Elliott was a patient there.1 |
